The powerful role Corporate Social Investment (CSI) has played and will continue to play in bringing about meaningful transformation that benefits the nation as a whole is highly revered at AEL.

For this reason, the company has partnered with The Tiso Group, one of South Africa's leading black-controlled and managed principal investment companies, to form the Tiso AEL Development Trust, which focusses on several CSI initiatives that serve various personal and professional causes both within AEL’s walls and within the community it serves.

The objectives of the Tiso AEL Development Trust are varied but have all been conceptualised and designed with the ultimate goal of delivering benefits to local communities, from which much of AEL’s workforce is drawn, while fostering prosperity, from a financial and personal growth perspective, and developing a sense of community from within. The Tiso AEL Development Trust actively supports the following CSI initiatives:

  • The Maths Centre: AEL actively promotes education in the fields of Science, Maths and Accounting as students that excel in these fields could ultimately become the leaders of tomorrow in the mining and explosives industry. For these reasons, the Trust sponsors Maths Centre interventions at four Tembisa High Schools and four Primary Schools today. In doing so, the Trust is playing a role in creating mathematically, scientifically, and technologically literate and functional learners who will achieve success in a wider variety of business arenas – including that of AEL
  •

  • In-Service Training Programme: Furthering its efforts in the educational spectrum, AEL welcomes students involved in a variety of fields of study to join the team from early on in their educational journey. It does this by sponsoring students currently studying in tertiary educational institutions to participate in its general training and development programme, called the In-Service Training Programme, where they are given the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in their fields of expertise. careers

  • NOAH: HIV and AIDS is one of Africa’s leading causes of death and it is the innocent sufferers that take a special place in the Trust’s ongoing CSI activities. With much of its support going to AIDS orphans, the Trust supports the NOAH (Nurturing the Orphans of AIDS for Humanity) project in Ivory Park. With around half of the 2.5-million orphaned children in South Africa being placed in this position due to AIDS, the need for financial support of initiatives like NOAH is imperative. This support is vital to ensuring these kids are given the opportunity to grow into healthy, happy adults who will hopefully lead the nation into an AIDS-free tomorrow.

AEL has formed an internal social investment committee, which assesses, implements and manages both the Trust’s and other select CSI projects.

In addition to those activities pursued by the Trust, AEL has invested heavily in a wide range of internally focussed projects that contribute to and improve the quality of life for its own workforce and their families, most specifically in the areas of education and HIV/AIDS.
