Johannesburg is positioned on top of what is referred to as the Central Basin - an area with a legacy of over 100 years of mining. As a result of no mine water being pumped from this basin for more than a year now, the acidic mine water below Johannesburg is rising at between 600 mm and 900 mm per day, with its current level being 600 m below the surface.
